Shelly Colwell - Talk with the Trainer

Shelly has lived in Colorado for 17 years and while she has always been fairly active, about 9 years ago she really caught the fitness bug, joined a workout class, and started exercising on a regular basis (at least three times per week). Her experience with the workout class taught her how to develop exercise routines as she occasionally filled in when an instructor was absent. Ultimately she decided to formalize her education and became certified with ISSA, the International Sports Sciences Association. Her formal training also includes certifications in CPR and First Aid. Now she enjoy training clients individually in their home, at the gym or in group classes.

What do you like most about being a trainer?

Being healthy and exercising is a huge part of my life! I love being able to help clients feel stronger both physically and mentally through exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

What are your 5 best tips/advice for your clients?

  1. Don’t put off exercise because you feel like you won’t be able to do the class or it will be too hard. I wasted 2 years thinking that I needed to “get in shape” in order to start a fitness class or work with a personal trainer. Just try it. It’s going to be a bit hard if you’ve done nothing, but it WILL get easier and you will start to feel and look amazing!

  2. Make a commitment to have exercise part of your weekly routine. Pick three days, whether mornings or evenings, and get started. In my 9 years of working out I have rarely missed a day. For me exercise is part of my life…like brushing my teeth.

  3. Start out with a great friend or with a personal trainer. It’s so motivating and supportive to have someone right there with you cheering you on and noticing your progress. A little competition is fun too. This is one of the reasons I love FE so much. Everyone is so supportive!

  4. 70-80% of weight loss is going to come from your diet. Stay away from processed foods, make sure you’re getting enough protein and eat lots of veggies and fruits. I don't eat a lot of meat so I supplement with protein drinks.

  5. Don’t waste calories on drinks and sodas. Drink lots of water and try green tea. To switch things up, I add fruits and veggies to my water. My favorites are cucumber (English) water, peppermint (one drop of essential oil) water and slices of strawberries, oranges, lemons, blueberries and mint leaves in water.

What are your interests/hobbies?

I am definitely a mountain girl!! I love being in the outdoors and nature with my family. I have always had a passion for horses and horseback riding. I also enjoy hiking (Mt Sanitas is a favorite), biking, jeeping, and photography. My new favorite interests are yoga and meditation!
